After elementary school, Markus attended the Rychenberg cantonal school in Winterthur and graduated in 2001. He then traveled to New Zealand for a language study trip lasting almost 6 months. Shortly after his return, he was accepted for civilian service.

During his first period of community service, Markus programmed an online library in PHP and a website for addiction prevention for a municipal agency.

While studying sociology and macroeconomics at the University of Zurich, he became involved in the Internet interest group, which led him to his first employer, Ywesee. There he learned the programming language Ruby, the concepts of object-oriented programming and the basics of operating and maintaining web applications using the rules of Extreme Programming (XP).

When Markus later enjoyed the LATEX implementation of the term papers more than the content of the papers during his studies, he decided to adapt the course to his personal preferences. In 2006, he transferred from the University of Zurich to ETH Zurich, where he began his studies in computer science.

Four years later, he completed an internship at EcoLogic AG and then continued to work for EcoLogic during his studies. During this time, he played a key role in shaping and building up EcoLogic's software development.
