Software engineer for 30+ years.
Specialized in database development and data publishing.

I was born in Los Angeles, but like most Americans I have moved several times around the country. I have a bachelor’s degree (1987) in education with mathematics, biology and general sciences from Shepherd University WV. I taught high school mathematics, computer literacy, and programming for a few years before changing to a career in Information Technology. I began IT work in Washington DC for a small company publishing WWF monthly newsletter, responsible for layout and printing.

Moved to Long Island NY and continued similar work for a company publishing IBM newsletters. Additional tasks managing customer database. Next moved to company publishing TV guides for cable TV providers. I developed an automated publishing system to generate text files customized for each cable company in the US, ready for quick import into desktop publishing applications. Installed and maintained Oracle DB, and became IT Department manager, team of 4. Moved to a new job as IT Manager for temporary employment agency, IT team of 5, with 8 offices on the eastern seaboard. Began development work in SQL Server for management assessment application. Switched to pure development for company changing from a legacy IBM order entry system to an in-house built C++/SQL Server application.

In 2000, I moved to Bern, Switzerland, and married my wife in 2001. I began work in Switzerland working for Ascom Mailing Systems, developing mailing app to manage franking machine with only 4 MB RAM. In 2004 I changed employer to Elektra Basel Land, managing variety of software with some application development. Then in 2006 I changed to my current employer e-mediat (Galenica) in Bern, where I still work as a DBA and software developer publishing medical data for the Swiss pharmaceutical industry. My primary responsibilities have been to ensure that data production and publication runs successfully every day. Secondary tasks were database development and support for both data entry and publishing applications. e-mediat merged with sister company Documedis and then was merged with Triapharm to become HCI Solutions. The development team was later moved to Galenica IT systems.

In March 2025 I reached retirement age and now work as Software & DB Engineer for Novaloop.

In my free time I enjoy cooking, construction projects around our house, and both casual and competitive commander EDH. I travel frequently to USA to visit my sons and their families in Minnesota and Maryland. They each have two children. I have 4 grandkids in US: newborn, 2, 4, and 6 years old. Also have 2 daughters here, and 2 more grandkids 1 and 3 years old. Grandchildren are the joy in my life, along with my wife and our big white Swiss shepherd.
